Even though the official arrival of spring occurred over a week ago with the Vernal Equinox, winter has become a tough season to shake at Mount Washington Alpine Resort.

“The snowfall slowed down over the last week so we're hoping to see some real spring skiing weather cook up here through April,” says resort spokesperson Brent Curtain. “With La Nina still influencing the weather, you don't see the sunshine up here too often so everybody is craving vitamin D.”

With some rays of sunshine peeking through in the 6-day forecast, Mount Washington is more than ready for their April Spring Session. The Session is a month-long mountain celebration complete with an extensive event list, discounts on accommodations, and resort-wide promotions.

“We're extending the season by two extra weekends so we want people to head up and enjoy the deepest snowpack in years,” explains Don Sharpe, Director of Business Operations. “On top the great skiing conditions, you can save with discounts on accommodations, Snow School programs, and our retail operations.”

The April Spring Session festivities kick off April 1 with free night skiing (no, this is not a joke!). Just bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to the ticket window and you will receive a night ticket in return.  All proceeds go to the Courtenay and Campbell River food banks.

Following hot on the heels of the free night ski on April 1 is the re-scheduled Full Throttle Slopestyle on April 2 for skiers and April 3 for snowboarders.  The original competition dates for the Slopestyle were postponed in early March as the Stomping Ground Terrain Park was buried under three metres of snow!  The park crew has the Stomping Ground in great shape and the venue will provide ample challenge to all competitors this weekend.

Upcoming highlights to look out for in April also include the Thrifty Foods Dummy Downhill on April 9, the Barq's Slush Cup on April 10 which includes the Tantastic Goggle Tan comp, and the JetFM Snowtubalympics on April 17.

Mount Washington Alpine Resort is open daily until April 10 and then reopens for two extended weekends on April 15-17 and April 22-25. The resort is located 30 minutes above The Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. WestJet, Central Mountain Air, Pacific Coastal Airlines, and Island Express service the Comox Valley Airport (YQQ).
