Mount Washington Alpine Resort is committed to provide our customers with the best possible ski and snowboard experience every day of the season. While weather and snowfall are not in our control, we work diligently with what we are given to produce the best ski and snowboard product on Vancouver Island.
Mount Washington, along with all of the West Coast of North America, and every other coastal resort was hit by the Pineapple Express during the week of February 7. The weather phenomenon where temperatures were as high as 10C in the alpine, coupled with a lower than normal snowpack, has proved too much to take alongside the recent heavy rain. As a result, the mountain's snowpack, especially at lower elevations, is too lean to continue with its operations for the time being.
It is our full intention to complete the programs in Snow School when we receive more snow. Should we not be able to complete the program we will do a full review in April and announce our decision then on how to best deal with the incomplete programs.
We were excited to be open with great conditions through the Christmas holidays and in January. We understand that there have been some great days and some not so great days and especially in the last week it has been challenging with regards to weather. In contrast, in the past, we have opened in late November or early December. We can’t and don't guarantee a certain level of snowfall every season; it's simply not possible. The majority of our seasons are filled with snow and some seasons are leaner than others.
We value our dedicated customers and want the weather to turn around as much as you do. It is just half way into a season that ends in April. The snow can and will come. It’s up to Mother Nature now to make it happen.
